Dear Older Jacqueline

Strong women were pillars behind civil rights movementThe Civil Rights Movement: Current Exhibits for Current Events - SYTA

Dear Author Jacqueline Woodson,

How has the Civil Rights Movement and growing up during that time impacted you today? I feel the pain and heartfelt stories that you connected through your book Brown Girl Dreaming. While growing up you seemed to be protected and shielded from a lot of it but how did this impact you after those years of being shielded and into adult years? What part of the Civil Rights Movement affected you most after not being protected by your grandma?

I feel there is so much in society that still needs to be changed and worked on to better for everyone, that being in race, background, ethnicity, etc. It's still saddening to see things in the news about protests, equal rights, and lots more! It's been many years, decades, centuries of getting things to change and just nothing!

What is one takeaway from your experiences you've gone through as you got older that wish didn't still exist today? There are still issues that haven't been resolved and there is still lots of change that needs to be done. What is one situation you wish could be solved in the snap of your fingers? I know it's hard just naming one.

Do you ever get times where you have situations like you experienced repeat in your head, and you get flashbacks? Is it one situation more than the other? The Civil Rights Movement wasn't easy, and I didn't have to go through it like you did.

Side Note: I just wanted to mention I enjoyed your book, Brown Girl Dreaming. I love stories such as yours being told through poetry, I feel it's so entertaining and heartfelt. I feel very connected and I sympathize with what you went through. I loved every aspect of your book and I was entertained by every chapter/ passage. I just wonder how you're doing today with how much the Civil Rights Movement impacted everyone who went through it. You lived it and I'm curious as I've never talked to an individual apart of such a scary, awful time. I know I have lots of smaller questions, just a curious person and want to know more!

Thanks for your time,

Madison Blinkman
