Unit Plan (ROUGH DRAFT)

 I choose the book, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. With this book, I have many activities however they may change as I begin to brainstorm more. This is a ROUGH DRAFT. I need better ideas and activities I can do as I’m struggling a bit. Any ideas? Feel free to provide ideas, I am flexible and willing to take any at this point. 

 

Week 1: 

  • Introduction Activity (Background Knowledge)- This is where students will find a song, poem, or picture from the holocaust and make a mini-presentation for small group presentations. I want to create a variety of different types of material from the Holocaust and learn more about it so students can create and have that background before reading. 

  • Read 2 Parts


Week 2:

  • Read 3 Parts 

  • Discuss what we have read, any questions? (More of a reading-focused week! Chill week) 


Week 3:

  • Read 2 Parts

  • Identify themes in the book so far and how certain characters I assign to them fits within the theme of the book. (Poster Board Activity with Groups)


Weel 4: 

  • Read 3 Parts  

  • Multiple Choice test on the Book: Make sure students comprehend and understand and learned what they were reading so they are successful. 

Watch the Movie while filling out a comparison chart: What is different and similar between the book and movie. (It doesn’t have to be in-depth but want the students to still be engaged and learning in some way).

The Class Canon & Cancel Culture:

  Do Works by Men Implicated by #MeToo Belong in the Classroom: I've never heard of the #MeToo movement until I read the article. I thought it was interesting the points it mentioned. I do agree that we should include all types of books in the classroom and the works by men as things happen and it needs to be covered and taught in schools. As gross as some things may be (such as rape, abuse, etc) students of an older age need to be aware of such things. I don't believe they should be covered for younger ages as they don't understand; however, I feel highschool and college levels should cover such topics and include the works of men implications. In the article it mentions, “I’m convinced that teaching the mind of male domination is important,” Professor Celis said. “But now I’m teaching against the book.” Teachers in my opinion need to stay neutral in situations and topics like this and teach it with an open mind.
