The Class Canon & Cancel Culture:

Do Works by Men Implicated by #MeToo Belong in the Classroom:

I've never heard of the #MeToo movement until I read the article. I thought it was interesting the points it mentioned. I do agree that we should include all types of books in the classroom and the works by men as things happen and it needs to be covered and taught in schools. As gross as some things may be (such as rape, abuse, etc) students of an older age need to be aware of such things. I don't believe they should be covered for younger ages as they don't understand; however, I feel highschool and college levels should cover such topics and include the works of men implications. In the article it mentions, “I’m convinced that teaching the mind of male domination is important,” Professor Celis said. “But now I’m teaching against the book.” Teachers in my opinion need to stay neutral in situations and topics like this and teach it with an open mind. You can have your opinions on such topics but they need to be covered to spread awareness and for them to learn what to do in such cases. This can create a topic of conversation and can implement new learnings. This can also help with students going through similar situations. Overall, I love the #MeToo movement and I feel the works of men should be implemented and belonging in the classroom setting.

Can we separate the life of the creator from the creation, the art from the artist, the writer from the writing?

I don't believe we can separate the life of the creator from the creation, the art from the artist, and the writer from the writing. This is what makes life the way it is and how we see creations, art, and writing. This would mean taking away the credit from individuals and ripping the rights away from famous individuals. Unless it's chosen for them to take there name away, you shouldn't be able to take and separate the life of those topics. Also, if you took those away and separated them it wouldn't exist and it would take it away from individuals.

The Problem with Cancel Culture:

Canceling culture can lead to such issues that can hurt others. Everyone grows up different, classifies differently, and grows up in different cultures. Canceling culture is simply not ok and needs to be covered and taught in schools. It's the same with the #MeToo movement. All things whether uncomfortable should be covered. Students need to be made aware of all these issues and theories in life and the truth. If you teach it, it needs to be covered honestly as it can be a complex issue. This subject is hard for some as they are all judged for events that happened in the past. Judging people on past mistakes still today I feel is not ok and it needs to be accessed and reached differently to students overall.

How to Get the Most Out of a Diverse Classroom:

Children have a creative mind and often fit into the windows and mirror term. The difference between windows and mirrors is the window is when children see a world outside of there own as in looking out the window and seeing a different perspective. While a mirror the children can see a reflection of themselves through the world. According to Don Vu, "providing both windows and mirrors is critical in the development of individuals who will grow up to be caring and compassionate citizens of the world." I believe this statement is true and I hadn't heard of the windows and mirror term before however I like the example.

Three books I plan on including in my classroom canon include
1. Peach and Blue by Sarah Kilborne
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/562739.Peach_and_Blue

2. Be Kind by Pat Miller
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34506910-be-kind

3. Stand in my Shoes: Kids Learning about Empathy by Bob Sornson
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17194941-stand-in-my-shoes

I included links about the descriptions of each books. These books share a common theme in which they compare how to be caring and help others!
